Well not all buggies are made from steel, on this page you can see how other people get round this problem by making wooden buggies

The Ultimate Wooden Buggy...The Flinstone Buggy
This is the designer and maker of the wooden buggy below
Oliver Sprenger
The Buggy is called KATE
Web site here
The buggy is a prototype from my studies project.
Before I had finished "Kate" it costs a lot of development time.
( the CAD drawing, the calculating...)
Before I can built and sell "Kate" in series, I have to change some parts of it.
I want to pimp the seat and the front of the buggy.
I will shortening the fork and the front drawing more deeply.
The man on the one picture is my dad.
Here's a video of Kate in action over some rough ground
Some specifications of Kate.
Axle length from the back (breadth) is 2m (78.74 inch) with tires and 1.51m (59.45 inch) without the tires.
From the front axel to the back axel is 1.57m (61.81 inch).
The total weight is 53,5kg (117.7lb). I think it`s light, isn`t it?
The Video I have added is a little preview about the flexuosity of Kate. I have 70kg (154lb) and the front of the chassis only touches the peaks of the gras and the point in the front I have standed on isn`t the main stress point in sitting and driving position.
This Kate is only for people which weigh till 80kg (176lb). For people which weight is higher Kates chassis gets burlier in front. But that`s no problem.
Next steps are a new fork and the seat. Temporaly I`m drawing and calculating a design edition of the fork. ( a V2A fork with a lot of lasered parts )
Next specifications will follow. When the wind allows a next turn I will shot some great pics in use and maybe a video.
